Overview of the Umpqua Basin 

The Umpqua River is one of only two Oregon rivers having headwaters in the Cascade Mountains and cutting through the Coast Range to the Pacific Ocean. The river enters the Pacific Ocean in the center of Oregon's dune country near Reedsport. Douglas-fir forests of the basin are legendary for their productivity, and provide a foundation for the timber industry, and local economies. Spring chinook and summer steelhead runs to the North Umpqua River are relatively healthy and support world-famous fisheries. Lowland, meandering interior valleys support considerable ranching activity. The Douglas County population of Columbia white-tailed deer have recovered from previously low numbers.
